The Light Jet Battle[1] was a battle in which Clu 2, Rinzler, and a few Black Guards chased after Sam Flynn, Kevin Flynn, and Quorra. The battle of course involved Light Jets and occurred over the Sea of Simulation.
History[]

After Sam Flynn had stolen Kevin Flynn's Identity Disc and rescued Quorra, the two left Clu's Carrier ship via a 3-man Light Jet with Kevin Flynn. Once Clu had returned to his Command Ship to find the trio escaping, he derezzed Jarvis and chased after Sam, Kevin, and Quorra with four Black Guards and Rinzler. As Quorra drove the three man Light Jet across the Sea of Simulation, she noticed Clu's forces tailing behind them, provoking Sam Flynn to fire at Clu and his soldiers from the back of the vehicle, exciting him.

Sam started firing at a Black Guard, noting there were five individuals left. Upon noting this, two Light Jets crossed the path of the Flynn's Light Jet, generating a Light Ribbon blocking the 3-man Light Jet, Quorra managed to get passed this by firing at the ribbon with the Jet's front gunner, earning Quorra Flynn's appreciation. Clu then signaled to Rinzler to divide in order for the other three Black Guards to tail the escaping trio. Prompting Quorra to split up. The trio managed to defeat the ones tailing them, one Black Guard crashing into the Light Ribbon generated by their vehicle while Sam managed to shoot down another's jet, causing him to fall into the sea, as well as successfully derezing one Black Guard after getting behind them. Rinzler eventually came face-to-face with Flynn, who was horrified as to what Tron, Rinzler's former name, had become.

Upon the brief encounter, Rinzler started to regain memories of him warning Flynn during the coup. Clu, who was behind Rinzler, then commanded Rinzler to fire at Flynn, though Rinzler instead flyed upwards as Clu himself shot at Sam, Kevin, and Quorra. The shots had caused the trio to go downwards, with Clu still firing at them and eventually, the engine of their jet. Rinzler then arrived, remembering his purpose, and crashed into Clu, destroying both of their Light Jets and allowing the Flynns to make their way towards the Portal.
Flynn and Quorra swapped Identity Discs after the battle while Clu, now free falling, noticed Rinzler falling to the ground. Rinzler attempted to pull out a spare Baton, though Clu dove towards him. The two scuffled before Clu managed to steal Rinzler's baton after kicking him backwards, allowing Clu to rez a new Light Jet while Rinzler fell into the sea below. As he sunk into the sea, Rinzler's circuits flickered from orange to white, signalling Tron's return.[2]
Behind the Scenes[]
Conceptualization[]

Concept art of the Light Jet Battle by David Levy
The Light Jet battle was completed by the Digital Domain team. According to Paul Lambert, a supervisor of Digital Domain, the team themselves tried to keep the shots where the Light Jets fired, realistic. The team also added interactive glows known as 'z-depth' to the Light Ribbons left behind by the Light Jet when they went through the fog of the Sea of Simulation. Explosions through said mist would be done by compositing.[3]
