Exo is a courier program in the Arq Grid and the protagonist of TRON: Catalyst. Formerly a courier program, she was exposed to the glitch catalyst in one of her packages when it exploded, giving her unique abilities she used to defeat Core guard Conn.

Exo, a courier program in Vertical Slice, unknowingly transported a fragment of the glitch catalyst in one of her packages. When it explodes, she gained the ability to loop through time, drawing the attention of Core. She is subsequently captured and forced to compete in the Games. Using her newfound powers, she was able to escape, and began searching for answers about her transformation.[1]

Fast Travel[]

Exo first met Vega in Arena 4A while he was looking for a contact. He reveals to her that he is a member of Reset, who seek to destroy Core and all they have built. When telling Exo about Automata technology, he says Reset wishes to harness that technology for their weaponry. Vega promises to tell her how she obtained the glitch catalyst should she obtain the Automata's code from the arena's Training Chamber.[1]

Once A Courier[]

Once Exo gave him the stolen Automata code, Vega reveals to Exo that the cargo she was carrying included the glitch catalyst, a part of his colleague Oracle's research. He tells her to find Oracle in her lab in the Outlands. Exo notes she can't escape the arena, while Vega suggests she steal a Baton to gain a Light Cycle.[1]

Visually Novel[]

Prime, the owner of the Terminal Bar, referred Exo to Query for assistance in dealing with Core following her escape from Arena 4A. During their initial meeting, Query requested that Exo check on his friend Weaver, a data broker residing in the Apartments Penthouse. In exchange, he offered to modify her identity disc, erasing incriminating memories to prevent Core from identifying her during a disc scan at the city's checkpoint.[1]

Check In[]

After confirming Weaver's safety—despite Weaver expressing concern that Query tends to worry excessively—Exo relayed the news to Query. As promised, he suppressed her memories of her crimes by editing her disc. Afterwards, Exo inquired if there was a way out of the city. In response, he recommended that she seek out the Automata at the Automata Embassy, located within the city.[1]

Diplomatic Relations[]

Once arriving at the Automata Embassy in Vertical Slice, Exo meets with embassy tour guide Kiya in the Embassy Offices, asking for help to escape the city. Noting that she is merely a tour guide, Kiya refers her to the embassy's ambassador, Spart, but that first, Spart needs Exo to obtain Core's access codes for her.[1]

Escape Velocity[]

After stealing Core's access codes and escaping their pursuit, Exo returns to Kiya in the embassy and gives her the stolen access codes. In return, Kiya modifies code in Exo's Identity Disc to grant her access to the top floor of the embassy, where she can find Spart.[1]

The Emissary[]

Before meeting Spart, Exo confronts a Core officer named Mo at the embassy, leading a manhunt for Exo. Exo eventually defeats Mo and his squad, and reaches the top floor of the embassy. However, she is stunned to see Spart talking to Conn, a Core guard, who has turned her over to him as a means to protect the Automata. Spart explains to her that the Automata have attempted true independence in the past, and while Sierra still strives for that society, she believes him to be an "old fool," and that only by building bridges can peace be truly achieved.[1]

Playing Catch Up[]

On her way to Oracle's lair to see Sierra and Spectre, Exo is confronted by an Automata Sage named Tan, who requests that she turn her Identity Disc over to him. Exo explains that Sierra is in danger and she's in a hurry to meet him. Insisting that Sierra is well-protected, he orders her again to hand him her disc, which she refuses, leading to a skirmish between her and him. Exo derezzes Tan and arrives at Oracle's lair. However, she is too late, as Sierra and Spectre were heading to the dock, despite Sierra being warned by Oracle of the danger of meeting Conn outside.[1]

Upon arriving at the docks, Sierra, along with Spectre, is derezzed by Conn, with Exo witnessing. Failing to talk Conn out of his scheme, Exo is derezzed by him as well, beginning another time loop.[1]

Reset[]

After another time loop caused by Conn derezzing her, Exo had to regather her allies once more before confronting Conn once and for all. Seeking Vega's assistance, he first asks her to assist a Reset squad in retaking control of the Null Refinery from Core, and should she be successful, he would help her in the Outlands. He gives her a Reset password, "Artemis," for her to say to the squad.[1]

A Switch In Time[]

Inside the Tributary of the Refinery, Switch, the squad leader, encounters Exo, saying the password to them given by Vega. Switch realizes that Exo is one of Vega's allies, and introduces themself to Exo. Surprised by the squad consisting of three people, Exo agrees to infiltrate the facility.[1]

Master Control[]

Switch, Exo, and the squad reach the central console of the Control Nexus after defeating a Core division. Switch gives a voice broadcast to the Core facility, saying Reset has full control of the Refinery and will return what was stolen from innocent programs. They tell Core that the Grid belongs to the programs. Oracle locks this outcome for Exo, and Switch thanks Exo for her assistance.[1]

Doctor, How?[]

In Tacitus' Stronghold, following another time loop, Exo reintroduces herself to Moto, Tacitus' brother. During their conversation, Exo suggests she steal Automata code from their embassy's lab to dismantle the Induction Chamber in response to Moto suggesting to feed the chamber code it can't convert, with the hope that it'll prevent his brother's future experiments.[1]

Script Kiddie[]

Following her successful break-in, Exo steps into the Induction Chamber with the Automata code flowing through her circuits. Oracle reassures her that the machine will not be usable for some time, and that she'll lock its destruction for future loops.[1]

Old Disciple[]

After looping once again, Exo explains her time-looping abilities to Query and seeks his assistance in escaping from Conn, who is planning to hand her over to the Automata as part of a deal. In response, Query shares details of his failed investigation at the Repository, revealing that Cass had knowledge of the Arq Grid’s impending destruction. However, the only program who could corroborate this information to the Disciples of Tron—Cass—is currently imprisoned by Core. Exo expresses her desire to free Cass, prompting Query to recall a female program—a former deputy of his—whom Exo reminds him of, and who is also searching for Cass. He provides Exo with his DoT badge, encoded to her disc, as a means of identification to the deputy. Query assures Exo that if she succeeds in rescuing Cass, he will offer his full support in return.[1]

Oasis[]

In the park, Exo encounters a program named Ludo, who informs her that a female investigator—Query’s former deputy—had fled following a confrontation with a Core officer. He provides Exo with a data fragment containing clues to track her down. Using the fragment, Exo uncovers three clues leading to the investigator's last known location. However, she eventually discovers that the investigator was killed by Proto in the Apartments while attempting to leave a message for Query, revealing Cass’ location. Proto is defeated and killed by Exo, who discovers Cass' whereabouts from programs in Temporary Storage.[1]

Organized Spline[]

Exo paid a visit to Temporary Storage in the Null Refinery to seek information of where Cass would be. After conversing with Verge and Patch, Cresc reveals to her that he helped refuel the Core soldiers' Light Jet, with Cass among them. He also tells her to be careful around Cass, due to their tendency to explode.[1]

Repeat Offender[]

In Tacitus' Stronghold, Exo confronts Tacitus, who considers Cass to be a nuisance due to their explosions. Not wanting to deal with them anymore, Tacitus lets Exo take the elevator down to Cass's cell. Upon arriving at the floor, Exo defeats several Core officers and activates three terminals to unlock Cass's room.[1]

Prophetic[]

Cass meets Exo for the first time, despite already knowing her through their visions. During their encounter, Cass explains that they have already seen Exo fighting to save the Arq Grid, as well as her unique time-looping ability. Exo reveals that Query requested her to free Cass, something they had expected, as they have been recaptured multiple times in the past.

Exo tells Cass that Oracle can secure specific outcomes, including their freedom from Core, even when she travels back in time. They also mention that Light Jets are available in the Hangar for Cass to escape. Cass thanks Exo, and asks her to tell Query not to worry about them, though they are aware of his concern.[1]

A Moment's Peace[]

After freeing Cass from Core, Exo initiates another loop and informs Query at the Terminal Bar that Cass is now safe and holds no resentment toward him for their prior imprisonment. Although Query does not recall his previous encounters with Exo due to the looping, he expresses a desire to help her defeat Core, believing she is the program completing the mission he should have finished many cycles ago. Exo, along with Oracle, instructs him to meet them in the Outlands, where they plan to regroup with their other allies. Before she leaves, Query gives her code to use the Decoy ability, revealing that he got it from a man in the library of the Repository.[1]

At Communication Tower Omega in the Outlands, Exo reunites with Oracle and their allies following her final defeat of Conn. Vega notes that no program can single-handedly solve the Grid's problems. Reflecting on the events set in motion by his discoveries at the Repository, Query acknowledges that the truths he uncovered were a catalyst, unleashing the worst in their world. Exo, however, reassures him that those same truths have also brought out the best—and that together, they now have the chance to prevent the end of the Arq Grid. Inspired by the stories of Flynn and Tron, Spectre believes that programs can change the coming destruction. Exo assures everyone that, no matter what they do, they will do it together.[1]

General information[]

Personality and traits[]

Throughout the events of Catalyst, Exo evolves from being primarily focused on escaping the city and uncovering the truth to actively helping others and standing up to Core. She refused to show fear when captured by either Conn or Tacitus, responding to their threats with defiance and sullen anger. Despite everything he has done to her, Exo ultimately pities Conn, recognizing that he feels trapped and underappreciated.[1]

Skills and abilities[]

Exo is shown to be skilled in trickery, as she often flies under the radar by pretending to be one of Core, or hides information from them to avoid alerting them to her identity. In Tacitus' stronghold, she gains the ability to turn her light orange to disguise herself as a member of Core. Partway through the game, she gains the ability to take code from her enemies and use it to temporarily modify her attacks. Exo is skilled in operating a Light Cycle, a proficiency she appears to have developed through her experience as a courier. Near the latter half of the game, Horii gives her his 'light pull' ability that he uses to attract enemies towards him.[1]

Following the explosion of one of her packages, whenever she is derezzed or chooses to activate the catalyst, the Arq Grid reverts to an earlier timestamp, while she keeps her memories of the previous loop.[1]
