Center City[1] is the main city seen within TRON and TRON: Legacy. It is the most commonly shown urban area within the Real World of the TRON Universe.

History[]

1980s to 1990s[]

Center City Legacy

An Ariel view of Center City

Center City was the hometown of many ENCOM employees and other users. It was where the ENCOM building itself was situated and soon Flynn's Arcade after Kevin Flynn was fired.[2] During 1983, Flynn and his family moved into a suburban neighborhood across a shore from the city just before his disappearance in 1989.[3] Often, Flynn and his partner Alan Bradley would observe the view from a window in the ENCOM Tower.[4]

After Kevin Flynn's disappearance, many protests were made by loyal followers of Flynn in the Flynn Lives movement. Most notably, in 1996, computer hacker Matthew Roth was arrested by the city's local police department before being bailed out by an anonymous user named "ISOlated Thinker".[5]

2010s[]

Kevin Flynn's son, Sam Flynn, would do annual pranks on ENCOM as a way to rekindle the memory of his father to continue his search. On one particular night, Sam hijacked the release of the company's latest software, ENCOM OS-12. Just barely escaping from the building's rooftop while being chased by a guard, Sam parachuted down to the city before getting stuck on a lamppost and landing on a taxi cab. Angered, the taxi driver swerved to dislodge Sam successfully as he tried escaping from the now arriving police, but he was apprehended and arrested before managing to be bailed and returning home. Sam visited his father's old arcade in search for potential answer linking back to a pager message received by Alan Bradley. Sam discovered the Grid and later returned with a Program named Quorra, who he took out to see the real world before she presumably went on to change it as intended by Kevin Flynn.[3]

Points of Interest[]

ENCOM Tower[]

Main article: ENCOM Tower

Previously managed by Ed Dillinger, before being succeeded by Kevin Flynn and once again by Sam FLynn, the ENCOM Tower is the building owned by the company ENCOM, the Tower serves mainly as it's base of operations and has a view of the city itself from it's high story rooms.

Flynn Arcade neighborhood

Flynn's Arcade[]

Main article: Flynn's Arcade

An additional building owned by Kevin Flynn, Flynn's Arcade was popular amongst youths during the 80s for its many arcade games. The building lies dormant within a now quiet and worn out neighborhood by the time of 2010. It was abandoned sometime after Flynn's disappearance in 1989.

Suburban Neighborhood[]

The neighborhood where the Flynn's resided, not much is shown of it other than the fact it was across a shore that separated the neighborhood from the main city area of Center City. Flynn often visited home to see Sam, but was busy with personal matters in the Grid and managing ENCOM. When Flynn went missing, Sam fled home, trying to pursue his father while being raised by his grandparents Grandma Flynn and Grandpa Flynn. What later happened to the Flynn residence when Sam's grandparents passed away is unknown.

Notes[]

  • The filming location for Center City was in Vancouver, Canada in both films while Flynn's Arcade was located in Culver City, California.
    • In real life, the name Center City is the name of the neighborhood and business district of Center City, Philadelphia, as well as another city in Minnesota. It could be possible the Center City in the films was in fact the same, or at least based off, the Center City located in Philadelphia instead however, due to the Center City in Minnesota being much smaller in comparison.
    • Kevin Flynn refers to his hometown as Paramus (Paramus, New Jersey), when speaking to Ram in the original script for the first TRON film. Flynn referring to Paramus as his home in a past tense indicates he moved from New Jersey to a state or city close by. Philadelphia being a state just next to New Jersey supports the idea of Center City's location even further.
